11 Popular Fall Nail Colors Trends to Try in 2021

With shutdowns and considerable restrictions, 2020 is likely to have done a number on your nails. Regular salon visits were replaced by head-to-toe at-home beauty treatments for many. Everything from boxed hair dye and waxing to manis and pedis, including gel kits and press-ons, was suddenly demanded of us.

Indie Nails

Pinterest data shows that searches for "indie nails" have increased by 21% this winter. But what precisely is the point of this nail craze? Simply put, it's a new way of painting each nail. One digit may have a checkered design, while others may have swirls or a modern twist on the French manicure, as illustrated above.

Velvet Nails

Glitter and metallic polish are used in a velvet manicure to catch the light and create a textured aesthetic that resembles velvet.

Abstract Organic Shapes

"We'll see a lot of abstract organic shapes as far as nail art trends go," says Rita Pinto, founder of Vanity Projects. These designs are best in muted, monochromatic colors, such as the rich burgundy and nude combination shown here.

Unique French Manicures

Look to French manicures for a softer approach to nail art. Pinto predicts that instead of white tips, there will be more fall monotone colors.

Brown Shades

According to Lisa Logan, famous manicurist at Nails.INC, brown shades are the "new nudes." These hues are available in both matte and glittery variants.

Shades of Pink

The days of muted, neutral pinks are long gone. From bubblegum to bright pink, look for a variety of colors. "Pinks were a popular option among designers this season," says Jin Soon Choi, manicurist and owner of Jin Soon Hand and Foot Spas in NYC.

Coffin Nails

According to Pinto, almond-shaped nails have been a mainstay for a long time and will continue to remain so. "In 2021, we'll see a lot more tapering square and coffin designs."

Light Blues

"A blue shade was the Pantone color of the year, and I expect this trend to continue into 2021," adds Soon Choi. She adds that these manicure colors are universally flattering as an added bonus.

At-Home Manicures

Since the start of quarantine, simple, easy-to-maintain looks and press-on sets have been incredibly popular—and will continue to be as we move into another winter of limitations, adds Pinto. Although there are many possibilities available online, some salons, such as Vanity Projects, also provide custom setups.

Natural Nails

According to Soon Choi, many people have been utilizing COVID limits as an excuse to take a break from gel and acrylics in order to cure their nails. However, this does not imply that you should completely disregard your digits. Soon Choi says there's greater interest in nail care, such as applying cuticle oil for hydration, to keep hands and nails looking glossy.

Bold Designs

Pinto also forecasts that later in 2021, when quarantine and social distance constraints, like this gold leaf on black, would hopefully loosen, we'll see some bolder looks and hues, like this gold leaf on black.
